Photo and video studio etiquette: 12 rules every creator should know

How to behave on set and in rented studios: punctuality, gear care, communication and leaving the space as you found it.

Arrive early, not on time

Studio time is booked by the hour. Arrive 15 minutes early so setup starts the moment your booking does, and plan your teardown inside your slot.

Know your shot list

Share a shot list and mood board with the team before the day. It saves time and keeps everyone aligned.

Respect the space

Ask before moving furniture, backdrops or the studio's own lights. Use tape that will not damage walls or floors, and never stand on backdrop paper in outdoor shoes.

Treat gear like it is borrowed

Coil cables over-under, sandbag every light stand, and never leave a camera on a tripod unattended near walkways. Keep drinks away from equipment tables.

Safety first

Tape down cables across walkways and keep hot lights clear of fabric. LED lights such as the Aputure Amaran series run cooler and are safer in small rooms.

Communicate on set

Call out "lights" before switching on bright lights and "flash" before firing strobes. One person directs the talent, so the subject does not get mixed instructions.

Be kind to talent

Offer water, explain what you are trying to capture and show them a good frame early. Comfortable people photograph better.

Back up before you leave

Copy cards to two places before wrapping. Carry spare cards and batteries so nothing stops the shoot.

Leave it better than you found it

Return items to where they were, take your rubbish and report anything broken. Studios remember the crews who do this.
