Filming Your Child's School Concert, Dance Recital or Graduation in Singapore: What Camera to Rent
Phones struggle from the back of a school hall. Here is what to rent to film or photograph your child on stage, from the all-in-one Sony RX10V to a telephoto kit.
Why your phone is not enough
School halls are dark and parents are usually seated far from the stage. Phone zoom gets soft and noisy, and the stage lights often blow out faces. A camera with a real zoom lens keeps faces sharp and lets you fill the frame with your child instead of the whole stage.
What to rent
Sony RX10V: our top pick for parents. One lens covers 24-600mm, so there is nothing to swap. It shoots good 4K video and is simple to use in auto mode. Sony RX100 VII: a pocket camera with a 24-200mm zoom. Best when you sit in the first few rows or want something easy to carry around on graduation day. Telephoto zoom for your own camera: the Sony FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM II or Sigma 70-200mm F2.8 for Sony bodies gathers lots of light in dim halls. Fujifilm users can rent the XF 70-300mm for extra reach. Better sound: a clip-on mic will not work on a child on stage. An on-camera mic such as the Rode VideoMic GO II picks up the music and the stage more clearly than the camera alone.
Tips on the day
Arrive early for a seat near the centre aisle, so you have a clear view without heads in the way. Check the school's rules on filming and flash first. Turn flash off; it distracts performers and does not reach the stage anyway. Use a fast shutter for dance and sports to freeze movement. Charge every battery the night before. Every camera set comes with at least two batteries and memory storage. Do a short test recording in the hall before the show starts.
