How to record clear audio for video, podcasts and interviews
Microphone choices, placement and settings for clean dialogue, from wireless lavaliers to shotgun mics and field recorders.
Audio is half your video
People will watch a slightly soft image, but they click away from bad sound. Getting the microphone close to the speaker is the single biggest improvement.
Wireless lavalier mics
Clip-on wireless systems such as the DJI Mic 2 and Rode Wireless PRO are the easiest way to get clean dialogue for interviews, vlogs and events. Hide the mic under clothing with tape, or clip it on the chest about a hand-width below the chin.
On-camera shotgun mics
A compact shotgun such as the Rode VideoMic GO II is great for run-and-gun shooting and captures what the camera points at.
Separate recorders
For backup, record a second copy on a recorder such as the Zoom F1 with a lavalier. If one track fails, you still have the other.
Set levels properly
Aim for speech peaking around -12dB, with room for laughter or shouting. Turn off fans and air-conditioning briefly when recording if possible.
Choose a quiet room
Soft furnishings, curtains and carpets reduce echo. Avoid glass-walled meeting rooms.
