Hokkaido and Japan Ski Trips: Keeping Camera and Action Cam Batteries Alive in the Cold
Lithium batteries can lose a big share of their charge in sub-zero weather. How to keep your camera and action cam shooting on a Hokkaido or Nagano ski trip, and what to rent from Singapore.
Why batteries die in the snow
Lithium cells slow down in the cold. A battery that reads 60% at the hotel can shut off after a few runs on a chairlift. It is not broken; warm it up and much of the charge comes back.
Simple habits that work
Keep spare batteries in an inner jacket pocket close to your body. Swap the camera battery before it drops too low. Turn off Wi-Fi and Bluetooth when you are not transferring. Charge everything every night, and top up with a power bank during lunch.
Action camera or 360 for skiing?
