Northern Lights Camera Rental from Singapore: The Aurora and Cold-Trip Kit
What to rent for aurora in Iceland, Tromso, Lapland or Antarctica: full-frame body, fast wide lens, travel tripod, spare batteries and starting settings.
Why phones and kit lenses struggle with aurora
Aurora is faint and moves. You need a lens that lets in a lot of light (F1.4 to F2.8) and a sensor that stays clean at high ISO. A full-frame Sony with a fast wide lens can capture the lights in a few seconds, before stars start to trail.
A simple aurora kit
Body: Sony A7S III for aurora video and the cleanest low light, or A7 IV / A7R V for detailed stills. Lens: Sony 16-35mm F2.8 GM II for wide landscapes, or Sigma 24mm F1.4 for the brightest images. Tripod: a carbon fibre travel tripod, light enough to fly with and steady in wind. Power: at least two spare batteries, since cold drains them fast.
Starting settings
Manual focus on a bright star using the zoomed screen. Aperture wide open (F1.4 to F2.8). Shutter 2 to 8 seconds; shorter when the aurora moves quickly. ISO 1600 to 6400. Use the 2-second timer so pressing the button does not shake the camera.
Shooting in the cold
Keep spare batteries in an inner pocket and swap them often. Wear thin liner gloves so you can still press buttons. Before going indoors, seal the camera in its bag and let it warm up slowly so moisture does not form inside the lens.
