How to power a shoot on location: batteries, power stations and planning
Plan power for outdoor and on-location shoots: camera batteries, V-mount packs, portable power stations and how much you really need.
Count your watts
Add up what you will run: lights, monitors, laptops and chargers. A 200W LED running for two hours needs roughly 400Wh, plus a safety margin.
Camera batteries
Bring at least three charged batteries per camera for a full day. Sony shooters can use spare NP-FZ100 batteries.
V-mount batteries
V-mount packs like the SmallRig VB99 or VB150 can power cameras, monitors and smaller LED lights for hours.
Portable power stations
For bigger lights, a power station such as the DJI Power 1000 or EcoFlow Delta 3 Plus runs mains-powered gear silently, with no generator.
Practical tips
Charge everything the night before, label batteries, and rotate them so none are left flat. Keep power gear in the shade in hot weather.
