Ricoh GR III vs Fujifilm X100VI: which pocket camera should you rent?
Comparing the Ricoh GR III, GR IIIx, GR IV and Fujifilm X100VI for travel and street photography, and which to rent for your trip.
Short answer
Rent the Ricoh GR III or GR IV if you want the smallest possible camera that fits in a jeans pocket. Rent the Fujifilm X100VI if you want a viewfinder, film-simulation colours straight out of camera and a more classic shooting experience.
Ricoh GR III, GR IIIx and GR IV
All share an APS-C sensor in a truly pocketable body. The GR III has a wide 28mm-equivalent lens, ideal for street, food and travel. The GR IIIx has a 40mm-equivalent lens that suits portraits and everyday scenes. The newer Ricoh GR IV improves speed and handling. HDF versions such as the Ricoh GR III HDF add a built-in highlight diffusion filter for a soft, dreamy glow.
Fujifilm X100VI
The X100VI has a 40-megapixel sensor, a 35mm-equivalent lens, in-body stabilisation and a hybrid viewfinder. Its film simulations make it hugely popular for social media and travel diaries.
Which is better for travel?
For hiking, cycling or nights out, the GR is easier to carry all day. For city breaks where you want the best images and a viewfinder in bright sun, the X100VI is the stronger choice.
A fun alternative
The Fujifilm X Half is a playful, film-style compact for casual holiday snaps.
